Changing my birth name?
I want to change my birth name, can I change my name to any name I want?
In a word, yes but as you may well know there are always some restrictions put in place by statute and case law. The general restrictions that are put in place are as follows:
You cannot have a name that infringes anyone else’s civil rights for personal gain or with the intention of misleading for example you want to legally change your name to Brad Pitt. Unless you have a very good reason for changing your name to a famous actor the court will not approve of this particular name change.
Fraudulent purposes is the main reason courts scrutinize the reasons as to why you are changing your name. It is illegal to change your name for the purposes of evading debts, taxes or to avoid capture for any criminal activities or lawsuits.
You cannot have a name that incites violence, racial slurs, and obscene or threatening words.
Your new name must not contain numbers, symbols or punctuation for example, 5, !, or even roman numerals IV.
Other than the above restriction you can choose any name you wish. Legally Change Your Name now.
